This Professional Learning Module provides guidelines for implementing the Shell Center’s Formative Assessment Lesson, Laws of Arithmetic. Educators can use this information to better understand how to apply the lesson, which is compatible with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), to their own instruction.

Much has been written and debated on the state-led shift toward more rigorous, consistent K-12 education standards commonly known as Common Core. At the same time, that intense focus on the standards has obscured an equally important shift – the adoption of instructional resources aligned to the new standards.
Ensuring all students are prepared to succeed in college and career is at the heart of the Common Core State Standards. As teachers work hard to find ways to help all students reach these expectations, we’re working to ensure that there are high-quality instructional materials available that have been developed by teachers for teachers.
