Rural Schools Benefit From Higher Standards

On the rural Hawaiian island of Molokai, the Common Core is helping students prepare for college and careers that may be far from home. For teachers, the standards are fostering greater collaboration.

According to educator Loretta Labrador, “A common set of standards also allows teachers across the country to participate in a common professional dialogue and share which parts of their curricula have been successful in teaching the standards.” And when more teachers are involved in the discussion, more students are given the chance to succeed—regardless of zip code.
